Retrofitting an existing ceiling for a projection screen

Yes: an existing ceiling can be retrofitted to carry a motorized projection screen. RND assesses the ceiling structure, frames a mounting point where one does not already exist, runs the low-voltage wiring and power the screen needs, finishes the ceiling to match, and commissions the screen as part of the room’s control system.

— The Retrofit

Five steps, from assessment to commissioning.

Assessment

The ceiling is assessed first — what is framing it, what is already routed above it, and whether a truss is present — before any work begins.

Framing

A mounting point is framed into the ceiling where one does not already exist, planned around the structure found in the assessment rather than through it.

Low-Voltage and Power

Low-voltage wiring for the screen's control, along with a dedicated power circuit for the motor, is run to the mounting point.

Finish

The ceiling is patched and finished to match the surrounding surface once the framing and wiring are in place.

Commissioning

The screen is set, its drop and stop points configured, and it is tied into the room's control system and tested as part of normal use.

— Katy and Houston Construction

Many homes in Katy and the greater Houston area are framed with engineered roof trusses rather than open rafters. An engineered truss is designed to carry load in a specific way, so it should not be drilled, notched, or loaded without an assessment first. Framing for a retrofitted screen mount is planned around the truss layout — using the structure already there, or adding a mounting point engineered for it — rather than working through a truss member directly.

— Questions

What homeowners ask first.

Can an existing ceiling be retrofitted for a projection screen?

Yes. A retrofit begins with an assessment of the ceiling structure and what is already routed above it, which tells us whether the screen can be mounted to the framing that is already there or needs a mounting point added first.

Does it matter if my home was framed with engineered trusses?

Yes. Homes in Katy and the greater Houston area are commonly framed with engineered trusses, and a truss is designed to carry load in a specific way — it should not be drilled, notched, or loaded without an assessment first. Framing for a retrofitted screen is planned around the truss layout rather than through it.

Will a retrofit mean opening up the whole ceiling?

Not necessarily. The framing, low-voltage wiring, and power a motorized screen needs can often be run through a contained opening rather than the full ceiling, and the finish work patches the ceiling to match once that is in place.

Do you serve my part of Houston?

RND Technology serves Katy, West Houston, and the greater Houston metro.

What should I do first if I want a screen retrofitted into an existing ceiling?

Begin a consultation. A senior member of the firm will ask about the room and the ceiling before recommending an assessment.
